Patients who present in a clearly defined manner can be easy to diagnose and easy to treat, but we know that rarely does this happen. This course addresses transfusion management of patients with complex serologic work ups, by examining two case studies of patients who were referred to the IRL.

Robin Cusick, MD, is currently the Chief Medical Officer of United Blood Services Arizona and is the Medical Director for the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory and Specialist in Blood Banking training program at Blood Systems Laboratories. Dr. Cusick also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Departments of Pathology and Child Health at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. Dr. Cusick is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine.
Dolores Figueroa, MT (ASCP) SBB, has been the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) System Specialist for Blood Systems Laboratories for over 15 years. She holds a certificate in Medical Technology from the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Science Campus. She attended the Atlanta American Red Cross Specialist in Blood Banking School, and is a certified medical technologist and specialist in blood banking through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
